Carolton Oak Scholarship Program

Norfolk Collegiate has a proud tradition of well-rounded student-scholars who demonstrate initiative, integrity and determination. To recognize exceptional students coming into the school, we have established the Norfolk Collegiate Carolton Oak Scholar program, which awards two merit-based scholarships for up to $15,000 per year to incoming ninth-grade students who are first-time applicants to Norfolk Collegiate.

To become a Norfolk Collegiate Carolton Oak Scholar, a new student must demonstrate exceptional intelligence, character and academic promise, and the student must be willing to share his or her talents to enrich the Norfolk Collegiate community through enthusiastic participation and leadership in the performing or fine arts, athletics, service, citizenship or our other extracurricular offerings.

Who is eligible to apply to be a Carolton Oak Scholar?

Students must be new (first-time applicants) to Norfolk Collegiate, applying in eighth grade for their ninth grade year. Students who previously attended Collegiate and withdrew but are re-enrolling are not eligible to apply.
Are current Norfolk Collegiate students eligible for this award?

No. Current Norfolk Collegiate eighth-grade students returning for grade nine are not eligible to become a Carolton Oak Scholar.

All students, new and returning, are encouraged to apply for Norfolk Collegiate's financial assistance program annually.
Is additional testing required (aside from the application)?

Yes. Carolton Oaks Scholar applicants must take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) between August and January of the applicants' eighth-grade year. For your convenience, this test is administered by Norfolk Collegiate.

Test dates may be scheduled with the admissions office.
How are Carolton Oak Scholars selected?

Following receipt of the application package, writing sample and interview, the committee considers an applicant’s academic performance, character, citizenship, leadership skills and other areas of demonstrated, significant merit.
Who selects Carolton Oak Scholars?

The Carolton Oak Scholars committee consists of the following Norfolk Collegiate staff: Head of School, Assistant Head for Advancement, Head of Upper School, and members of the admissions team.
How many awards are given?

Two new awards are given each year to incoming freshmen. Awards are renewable through the students' senior year at Norfolk Collegiate.
Is financial need a factor in selecting Carolton Oak Scholars?

No. The Carolton Oak Scholar award is need blind, meaning all students meeting the application requirements and demonstrating exceptional merit, regardless of financial need, are eligible for selection. All students are encouraged to apply for Norfolk Collegiate's need-based financial assistance program.

WHAT TO EXPECT
We are delighted to again off the Carolton Oaks Scholarship for the 2024-25 academic year and applications will open in the fall.

2024-25 CAROLTON OAKS SCHOLARSHIP TIMELINE
Applicants must submit a letter of intent to Assistant Head for Advancement Stacy Nixon at snixon@norfolkcollegiate.org no later than Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, for the 2024-25 application. The letter of intent should include no more than 250 words explaining why you believe you are an ideal candidate for the scholarship. We ask that you please send as a PDF document.

Applications close Jan. 19, 2024
Invited to submit an additional essay, due on Jan. 31, 2024
Selected candidates will be notified of interview by Feb. 5, 2024
Interview on Feb. 13, 2024
Scholarship recipients will be contacted upon release of the contract or notice of enrollment

Two finalists will be awarded scholarships, which can be renewed annually provided recipients maintain standards of excellence determined by the school.
