Arts & Innovation

Arts

At Norfolk Collegiate, innovation comes in many forms and it's evident in the classroom which is a hub of activity. Students work on everything from engineering simple catapults to designing 3D-printed robots. Here, it’s not just about learning concepts; it’s about applying them in creative, tangible ways.

Our Arts & Innovation program is built on the foundation of student agency and creativity. We create a space where students are in control of their own learning, allowing them to take risks, explore their passions and make meaningful connections between what they learn and the world around them. Every class is designed to inspire students to take ownership of their learning, apply their skills in innovative ways and solve problems that matter to them. This ethos connects all aspects of our Arts & Innovation program, fostering a learning environment where students thrive as creators, thinkers and leaders.

    In our Lower School
Our visual arts program begins in the lower school where students explore the visual arts as a resource class from pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5. Students work with paint, paper, clay, wood, yarn, fabric and other media to explore various design techniques.

Our inclusive art program rewards all students for their creativity, while also infusing creative play, technical skills and art history. Projects are closely linked to topics studied in the classrooms to reinforce math, science, social studies and English.

    In our Middle School
Our middle school's visual arts program exposes our students to a variety of artistic styles and methods, while also exploring art from around the world. In these classes, cooperation, responsibility and respect flourish. At Norfolk Collegiate, our art curriculum builds critical thinking, creative problem solving, and explores multiple viewpoints.

Students also examine the elements of art and principles of design, as well as art criticism and art history. Emphasis is placed on nurturing habits of observation and reflection. Sixth grade students focus on art from around the world. Combined classes of seventh and eight grade students explore two- and/or three-dimensional art concentrations.

    In our Upper School
Collegiate provides an array of visual arts offerings for upper school students, including pottery, painting, photography and digital art. Through visual arts instruction, students learn to value diverse perspectives and cultures and examine their world and their own experience within it. Our seasoned faculty encourage creative and flexible forms of thinking, experimentation and original point of view.

Students are offered the opportunity to explore their creativity, whether experienced or inexperienced in the arts, as well as pursue advanced classes and delve deeper into specific mediums. By stimulating our student's imagination, art education at Norfolk Collegiate opens up possibilities for innovation, fosters the acceptance of multiple viewpoints, promotes observation and reflection, and engages young minds in envisioning new ideas for tomorrow's world.
  • Fine Arts

The music program is a vital, thriving part of Norfolk Collegiate's curriculum. Chorus, drama and band are introduced in the lower school and continue throughout high school. Concerts, a jazz performance and plays also showcase our talented students.

    In Our Lower School

Norfolk Collegiate's elementary music program provides a foundation for basic music literacy and appreciation. Students experience music sequentially through singing, moving, playing, listening and creating.

Students explore the concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, form and expression in their lower school years. They also present musicals, choral, band and string concerts each year, as well as perform in several off-campus performances.

    In Our Middle School

Middle school students grow and develop through their explorations of the performing arts while also expanding their knowledge about themselves and the world around them.
Students explore the performing arts through Chorus, Drama, Beginning Band, Band and Strings.

    In Our Upper School
Upper school students further build upon skills learned in the lower and middle school through participation in band, chorus, strings, and theatrical performances and production. As students explore the performing arts, we help them grow into individuals ready to face the challenges of our ever-changing world.

Students pursue these passions through A Capella, Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Band, Strings Ensemble, Theatrical Production and Theatrical Performance.
  • Hackney Theater

Hackney Theater, serves as a cornerstone for our performing arts program. This 425-seat professional theater is paneled with natural oak and equipped with state-of-the-art lighting, sound, and a full fly rigging system, providing students with an immersive experience in every production.
  • Performing Arts

    Plays & Musicals
Our theater programs helps to develop critical thinking while stimulating creativity. Middle and upper school students produce and run three theater productions each year, including the fall play, the spring musical and the middle school play. Each production is brought to life under the direction of our expert faculty who guide the students on their creative journey.

    Sound & Lighting
Not all students want to be in the spotlight and many of our Oaks shine on our sound and lighting crew for theater productions. Students learn how to operate the high-tech sound and light equipment in the stunning Hackney Theater in our Meredith Center for the Arts.

    Theater Production
Behind the scenes, our Theater Production classes are booming as students bring their imagination to fruition by designing play and musical sets. Their vision begins on paper as they collaborate on a set design. It's then brought to life via a 3-D model where students are able to tweak their design. Finally, through hammers, saws, paintbrushes and more, they create the final set, whether it's the hallways in "High School Musical" or the streets of "Almost, Maine."

After the spring productions have wrapped, Theater Production students participate in the annual Rube Goldberg competition where teams try to build the most elaborate and successful contraption.

Come show time, the students take over and bring the show to life!
