2012 Summer Reading Assignment for Seventh Grade English
	Julieanne Hastings jhastings@norfolkcollegiate.org   Required Summer Reading: Students should be prepared for discussion and assessment of these two books when they return to school.   Milo: Sticky Notes and Brain Freeze, Alan Silberberg More than just a middle school misfit, Milo has to deal with some very real issues. This heartwarming story will have you laughing out loud as you fall in love with the characters.   Divergent –or-Insurgent (Divergent series), Veronica Roth *Students who have already read Divergent should read Insurgent as the required summer novel. Those new to this series need only read Divergent.  This Divergent series is filled with action, heartbreak, and shocking consequences. If you loved Divergent, you are sure to find the sequel to be just as captivating. Ashley Rhodes- Courter Biography   Three Little Words An inspiring memoir of a young girls nine year journey through the foster care system.  Mel Glenn Fiction    Who Killed Mr. Chippendale? A Mystery in Poems Free verse poems describe the reactions of students, colleagues, and others when a high school teacher is shot to death as the school day begins. Margaret Sue Haddix Fiction   Double Identity Bethany Coles seeming normal life changes quickly after she is sent to live with her Aunt. Filled with mystery and intrigue, this futuristic science fiction will keep you guessing until the end. Shaun Tan Graphic Novel   The Arrival This novel, told in beautiful sepia like pictures, will have you imagining the struggles that any immigrant to a new land might face.    Avi Fiction    Nothing But the Truth This documentary type novel is like reading a file containing memos, diary entries, letters and bits of interviews. Ultimately, it is up to you to sort through the many perceptions to figure out the real truth.
