Middle School Chorus/Drama - This course is designed to explore the fundamentals of acting; reinforce basic musicianship skills in vocal production and to provide an opportunity for creative self-expression through public performances both in the school and the community.
Middle School Band - Middle School Band offers a unique training and performing environment for young band students. The band is carefully trained in the basics of playing and reading music starting at a level of difficulty comfortable for the ensemble at the beginning of each year. The band performs at least three times each year at the fall, winter, and spring concerts. Additional performance venues in and out of school are considered depending on the readiness of the ensemble and the availability of the students.
Middle School Beginning Band .- Middle School Beginning Band is a nine week activity that meets two times a week during Choice Time. It is designed for students with little or no band instrument training. Beginning Band, along with some private instruction and daily practice at home, is designed to accelerate students to an appropriate skill level, which will enable them to join the Middle School Band. Beginning Band is available for the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. The school can recommend private instructors. Interested students should register for Middle School Band 6
Middle School Band/String Ensemble
Middle School Chorus/String Ensemble - Middle School String Ensemble is an option for students enrolled in either Middle School Band or Middle School Chorus. Students receive instruction in either band or chorus three days a week and instruction in strings two days a week. The String Ensemble class focuses on improving a student’s skill with the violin, viola, cello and bass and the student’s ability to play with a group. The String Ensemble has three concerts a year. Beginners as well as advanced students are welcome and all levels are accommodated.
Public Speaking – This course is designed to provide students with the skills to communicate effectively. Each student will learn to prepare, present and analyze public speeches. They will present oral interpretations in poetry, prose, humor and drama. The students will also learn how to prepare and present an expository and persuasive speech. These skills will provide students with the confidence they need to speak with emphasis, purpose, expression and clarity.
Civics - Students will study the governmental structure of theCommonwealthofVirginiaand the major cities of the Hampton Roads area. They will investigate current issues facing the governing bodies and their roles as citizens.
Creative Problem Solving - This course will give students the opportunity to think outside the box to come up with creative and unique solutions to some common as well as unusual problems.
Personal Development 6 – This course is designed to aid students in making the transition to middle school amid emotional, physical, social, and academic changes. Topics will include organization and study skills, friendship issues, leadership, responsibility, and decision-making.
