Language Arts
In Language Arts, kindergarten students will develop phonemic awareness through oral blending, segmentation, sight word recognition, spelling relationships, and handwriting letter formation. Students will develop an appreciation for literature, poetry and the writing process.
Math
In Math, students will explore numeration, logical reasoning, and problem solving through manipulatives, Smart board lessons and games. Students will begin to link concrete ideas to abstract math concepts.
Science
Students will begin to experience the world around them using their five senses. They will explore and investigate living things, matter, weather, seasons, and the Solar System.
Social Studies
Students will understand their place in society and how to be a responsible citizen. Students will appreciate similarities and differences among various cultures in the United States. Students will learn how technology has changed the way people live and work.
Spanish
Exploratory Spanish for Kindergarten is designed for students to explore basic Spanish words in various settings. Students learn basic words for the colors, numbers, shapes, and days of the week, body parts, foods, clothing, places, weather conditions, greetings, family, animals, classroom objects and house objects. Students also learn how to communicate common expressions when expressing the weather condition and likes and dislikes with foods. Students learn the proper way to greet people in Spanish. Students learn to count 1- 50 in Spanish. Students experiences the Spanish culture through songs and Spanish games.
Music
The student is given a foundation for basic music literacy and appreciation. Students experience music sequentially through singing, moving, playing, listening and creating. Music concepts explored in kindergarten include rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, form and expression. Exposure to a range of music opens us up to how we perceive and perform music.
Art
Students are introduced to four elements of art - line, shape, color and texture. Students will complete elementary projects that allow them to use their imagination and creativity but with a concentration on incorporating these elements of art into their works of art.
Computer
Computers are used to reinforce and enrich skills in math, geography, science and language arts. Problem solving and logical thought skills are reinforced through the use of appropriate software. Graphic and desktop publishing programs are used to design and publish documents.
Library
At Norfolk Collegiate School all students visit the library weekly for selection of books for course work and independent reading. They learn library organization, proper care of books, and age-appropriate library skills.
Physical Education
The students will demonstrate an understanding of movement that fosters cooperation and sportsmanship. The students will be encouraged to give their best effort at all times.
